Recently I have been watching Torchwood: Miracle Day. It has something to do with Dr. Who which I have never gotten into but this show is something I’m enjoying and I might see if I can buy some earlier series to watch when I’m done with this.
One thing in this series is that one of the major characters (Captain Jack Harkness) is gay. The episode I watched last night shows him going into a gay bar and picking up the bar tender.
I know this is a British show but it is still pretty mainstream.
How long before a mainstream American sitcom has a gay character? I think it is funny also that Captain Jack is a masculine/tough guy as well.

Erm, well there’s Will & Grace, that’s been going for a long time

If it’s U.S. sitcoms you’re talking about, there are a good number already… Ugly Betty had several gay characters including Betty’s brother, Modern Family has a gay family, and Glee is about as gay as tv gets here, if it qualifies as a sitcom.
We don’t really have a Jack Harkness in any of our action shows like Torchwood though. He’s awesome.

I think Dave is talking about a main character being gay because there are so many gay characters in US shows. Not already mentioned includes – Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Dawson’s Creek.
Much more than here in Oz..

John Barrowman is the actor. He’s bi/gay in the program and gay in real life.
Dave Evans
I forgot about Will & Grace – that is pretty main stream.
There is the gay neighbours in Family Guy as well which I forgot about.

I’ve always loved Dr Who and Torchwood since it first came out on the BBC here in England! Praise you BBC!

Actually Torchwood Miracle Day is a US production of the British show. After 3 seasons/series in the UK, it was brought to the US of A by Starz. Captain Jack Harkness is a 51st century man, where sexual partners are driven by attraction and not social pressures. However, it does seem he likes the guys a bit more than the gals (which I’m all for).

I remember when production of Torchwood became a US production questions were being raised about the “gayness” of Jack Harkness and how that part of the story would continue. I am not able to view the program so don’t know how this is going. All of the programs mentioned are good, more comedies than a Torchwood type program (I have watched it on video)

@Bob M – they kept it up (or Jack did anyway) – ha ha. Captain Jack goes into a bar, the bartender admires the coat. Our hero offers a threesome – him, the bartender and the coat. And there was some one-on-one action too. Yeah TorchWOOD!

John Barrowman would probably look good in a speedo.
So would Bradley Cooper.
