These are stories of my travels – or stories of while I am travelling.
I woke up this morning, looked outside and it was blue sky, not a breath of wind. If only I was at the beach.
My plans to head back to Aussie are taking shape. I spoke to an old land lord this week who thinks the place I last rented might be available come February 1st. That would be awesome. This house is an old duplex, right on the beach and one of the few old properties that hasn’t been demolished to build some 3 story monstrosity. The house is old and pretty small but it is only me and you literally walk out the kitchen and the grass rolls down to the sand.
It is super close to town and just a short stumble from the Pub and the Beery (those familiar with the area will know what institutions I’m talking about).
Although I’m still excited about nearly 2 more months of snowboarding, I admit I am looking forward to waking up listening to the waves.
Expedia (the travel website) did a beach survey back in July and speedos were discussed in detail.
Here are some results that I thought were interesting:
- Only 7% of Aussie’s said they are ‘Speedo Lovers’ but 72% said speedos are acceptable beach attire!!!
- Nor surprisingly, only 50% of American’s said that speedos were acceptable beach wear.
- The lowest in the survey was Japan where only 29% said speedos were acceptable – kind of odd since in Onsens you aren’t allowed to wear anything.
Top 5 Countries where speedos were acceptable to wear on the beach:
- France – 91%
- Italy – 87%
- Brazi- 86%
- Sweden – 83%
- Australia – 72%
My take from this survey, I’m surprised how many Aussie’s thought it acceptable beachwear. My main group of mates on the Central Coast are all between 20yo and 30yo and we hang out on the beach and play cricket and I can’t imagine any of them wearing a speedo when just hanging out. At the pool or going for an early morning swim would be fine but I don’t think they are that speedo tolerant just yet.
Last time I was a member at the Gosford pool a majority of guys wore speedos where here in Colorado and even in San Francisco where I was a member of a pool, I’m in the minority when I’m wearing speedos.
Maybe with the soccer World Cup and the Olympics down in Brazil, their love for speedos will spread north into America.
I think I have my travels plans starting to take shape. I’m definitely missing the beach and a busy as all hell weekend here in Colorado with not a whole lot of snowboarding going on and hearing about my mates back in Aussie enjoying the beach has me primed.
I’ll head back to the Central NSW Coast of course but I don’t really want to be there during the summer holidays and I’m sure that would make it tough to find a place to rent that is semi affordable as well. So my plan is to leave here the first week of February. I’ll probably spend a week in San Francisco catching up with some mates there and then get back in time for some speedo weather.
Kip is keen to come ‘down under’ for the first time and will head down a little later in the year for a few months.
I’m excited, I’ve been looking at realestate.com.au for a few hours this morning. Over the last few years I’ve stayed at Terrigal and Avoca but I might even extend my search a little further north since some of those beaches up towards Birdie are gorgeous and a little quieter. Once I finish this post I’ll start looking at flights.
Below is a view of Sydney I’ve never had but the last time I was in Sydney I had half a day to kill before my flight and just spent it walking around playing tourist.
